There are literally hundreds of books and websites out there that talk about content marketing, social media marketing and every kind of product marketing you can name. But the bottom line for most start-ups is that it needs to be something that you can do yourself, as you don’t have the money to pay some expert. So, what can you do? Here are some ideas we have gathered up from a variety of sources that point to inexpensive or downright free ways to create some marketing techniques to get your site seen and read that won’t eat up all your hard-earned investor money.

Be Informative

Google loves sites that tell readers good information. Do you have some great information you can share on your site? It doesn’t have to be complicated and it should be something that gives your site an air of authority. The assumption being made here is that you are a subject matter expert on whatever it is you are offering. If you are willing to share some of that expertise with others, especially if it is relevant to your site and knowledge that is useful, then you will have a site worth visiting and worth ranking higher with Google.

A good example of this is a company that makes and sells plastic molding of a specific type. Sure, they talk about what they have to offer and why it is so good, but they also offer a guide to plastic molding that helps clients figure out just which kind is best for their needs. This is helpful information and it is based on their expertise in their product. For this reason, the page that has that guide ranks well and the site does better on the whole. Giving away great information is a smart way to make your site more visible and more relevant to potential customers. But there are other ways to get that ranking.

Webinars are Gold

Do you like to talk? If you are the kind of person who is completely comfortable at conventions talking to strangers about your product or idea, then hosting a webinar may be a great web builder for you. There are a number of companies that offer free or virtually free software for this, and the kind of viral attention you can get is fabulous.

Sure, doing something like this takes time and you will need to do the research first to see what works and doesn’t work for others before you start brainstorming your own. But if time is something you have far more than money, this is a good way to get your website seen and establish yourself as a subject matter expert for your field. It is also a great way to generate traffic before and after the webinar if they come into it from your site.

Promote Across Platforms

Cross promotions have long been a great way to introduce yourself and your product to new customers. It used to be done primarily through connections you would make at networking meetings and the like. Today there are a number of ways you can work with vendors, business partners and local businesses to promote each others product.

It can be as simple as recommending your website designer to others by providing a free banner on your site, and having them do the same for you on theirs. You might have a local company who does something that is complimentary to what you offer, such as an artist who creates one of a kind socks and you sell handmade shoes. You have similar customers, complimentary products and can easily not only provide banners on each others site but also perhaps be guest bloggers on each others company blog. After all, you do have a blog, don’t you?
